SEVEN GENERATION Winery

SEVEN GENERATION Winery - Where the Danube meets the vine

In early May 2021, located 100 km from Bucharest—along the route via Giurgiu and Ruse to the village of Mechka (25 km from Ruse)—I discovered a spot on the banks of the Danube capable of satisfying any tourist: the Seven Generations Winery Hotel.

Some facts about its history should be mentioned.

A long time ago, in 1878, a young man named Iliya Rabchev left his family in Bulgaria and went to France to study the secrets of winemaking. Four years later, Iliya returned to the village of Byala Cherkva and founded the Rabchev winery. Soon, the “Rabchev” family cellar became the largest producer of wines and spirits in the region.

A few decades later, another young man, Luben Rabchev (the fifth generation “Rabchev”) left Bulgaria and went to America, where he studied wine and business. After 40 years in America, Luben returned to Bulgaria and founded the SEVEN GENERATION winery.

Today, the "Seven Generations" winery produces wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot using the classic technology, passed down from generation to generation. And I can assure you that the red wines produced here are of the highest quality. Cabernet Franc was my choice, though.

I also participated (with prior reservation) in a wine tasting, which was not at the level I expected because the English language is not very well practiced by the Bulgarian colleagues... it was an unusual "quiet" tasting!…

The hotel itself blends perfectly into the local architecture; situated between the Danube and a meticulously maintained vineyard, it offers extraordinary views. The beautifully decorated restaurant serves a varied enough selection of dishes to satisfy every taste-given the riverside location, we chose the catfish cutlet, which was delicious and, naturally, paired with a first-class Chardonnay.

It should also be mentioned the existence of a generous swimming pool, beautifully located and very well maintained. From the location there are excursions (5 km to the Danube bank) with some very interesting mini cars.

In conclusion, a weekend and not only, can be spent at SEVEN GENERATION in very good conditions. Don't expect low prices though, the location offers many interesting things and the prices are reasonable (lower than here in Prahova Valley)

The captured images will say more than me about the opportunity of making such a holiday trip, enjoying a delightful experience in the country on the right bank of the Danube.
